E-book reader part2

There are other differences between e-book reader and tablet. But, I’d like to introduce one thing. That is way to display texts. e-book reader and tablet have different display method. Usually we can divide tablets have OLDED or IPS and readers have E ink(electronic paper display). It is the most important difference between reader and tablet excluding ‘concentration’ that we discussed. Because it is sure that memory capability and speed will have no difference more and more. So many people often use display as a decision factor to buy.

 

I think you have been familiar with tablet’s display since many company advertised it starting from AMOLED. As you know, these days’ electronic devices have excellent ability, clear and vivid display. But that also have disadvantage of making our eyes tired. (There are some pros and cons. I’m agree with tiring.) Measures to solve tiring came out little by little. E ink which is applied in e-book reader is most representative method and completely different way of displaying(OLED or IPS).

 

Even though this is not a post for detail information about E ink, we need to see some properties. First is black and white, meaning not color. Second, there are afterimage problems. When you flip the page, unlike smart phone, it leaves a trail of last page so you might see some of hazy word. And last, E-ink display has low reaction rate because of its way of displaying that is loop of spreading and erasing. So you may feel delay when touching display to flip the page. That also means very bad for playing videos.

 

But, as e-book reader is invented for reading books, it is not a serious problem. Afterimage problem, people usually consider as worst disadvantage is just same with problem of paper. Think of time when reading books under the light. We can notice the hazy word of next pages. Rather, I like afterimage problem because it gives me feeling like really reading paper book. Other disadvantages also are not a big problem and as we consider technology’s development speed, soon most of it will be solved. Already there are active research of color E-ink. Black and white or color will be just problem of personal select.

 

There are other ways also to reduce tiring of eye. LG has ’reader mode’ and in app store, you can download many applications blocking blue light. Seeing these software technology designed for comfortable reading environment, there might be non reason for E-ink existing. Maybe, E-ink is just a service we can get only now.

 

So, difference we should consider most is environment how much we can concentrate, not others. There might be e-book reader devices that have music player or internet browser soon. But things steadily sold and popular will be the device focused on reading just itself. Amazon showed user-friendly design of ‘kindle’ which we can use only with one hand to flip page front or back. With tha design, we can read books more comfortably. E-book reader which give up factors that hinder reading will be surely produced more and be developed toward helping concentration.
